I bet you're getting bored of being the hero. 

You're always being rushed off somewhere unpleasant; planets on the brink of destruction, nail-bitingly cold continents, wastelands and so on. But when you're not otherwise being led towards your doom, there are always people demanding that you do this or that or the other. Always, there's that neverending chain of people going, 'Do this, do that, go here, scoop out that monster's heart for me!'. 

World-saving is overrated. 

On the other hand, according to Ruined Online, World Destruction is not. 

Right now, I'm still trying to make sense of what Ruined Online is destined to be. Currently, sources have the game billed as a browser-based multiplayer arena-style action game that includes high-end features common to traditional games'.



Given what I know of browser games, I'm a little skeptical about the claims. Sure, the screenshots look well-polished but how are to know that the images have not been refined for the sake of press releases? Sure, the teaser video doesn't appear half bad. What keeps me from outright dismissing the game is the fact that Ruined Online is apparently being built atop the Unity 3 Engine - a game development tool that some critics have called the best in the market. It seems that Bigpoint has also joined forces with dSonic Inc and Cinematico Inc to develop various components of the game. Google tells me that Cinematico Inc, a full service 3D design, animation and motion capture studio, has done work for quite a few movie tie-in, Chronicles of Riddick and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. 

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I'll leave that up to you.

Heiko Hubertz, CEO and Founder of Bigpoint, does have ambitious dreams though. He recently told the press that,

"With Ruined Online, we believe that we've taken a huge step forward in producing a game that looks and feels like something you get with console and PC games, but requires nothing more than a browser to play." 

With the kind of gameplay that is being promised, I can't help but worry about both lag and performance; will they be able to live up to their promises? After seeing the site, I definitely hope so. Set in a post-apocalyptic San Francisco, Ruined Online appears to be offering up to six different characters for the discerning player to use in their battles. From a gasmask-wearing samurai to everyone's favourite ice-queen assassin, it looks like we're going to run through the whole gamut of stereotypical villains.

Yes. Villains. Not heroes. Villains.

On paper, this does sound interesting but it leaves so many questions unanswered. What are these evil-doers supposed to be doing? What happened to San Francisco? Why an arena style game? 

But most importantly, will this work? 

Evidence so far appears rather inconclusive but the premise of the whole notion is unique enough to keep Ruined Online on my to-watch list. Given that a recent demo was made available at GDC online, it's likely we'll soon get a glimpse of an answer.
