To buy Dinner Date with those expectations in tow is to cause yourself a lot of unneccessary grief.
However, if what you want is an experience, then that's something else entirely. Though South-East Asians might find the $9.99 is a somewhat hefty price tag to pay for something so unfortunately short, Dinner Date does dish out what it promises. It is a piece of interactive theartre, a digitized drama with a narrator and a plot but no physical body. In Dinner Date, you are the hands and feet and the eyes, the camera man that directs the flow of the story, the puppetmaster that brings the mannequins to life.
And yes, like Jeroen Stout promised in his earlier interview with us, you will find the act of eating bread strangely appealing.
Does that I mean I liked Dinner Date? No.
To be more precise, I absolutely loath the protoganist. From the pitch of his voice right down to the things he worries about, there's just something about Julian Luxemburg that makes it impossible for me to empathize with him. In many ways, Julian is your standard grade-A bastard; neurotic, sex-driven, paranoid and pretentious. There is enough intelligence and soul to the protoganist that it makes his seduction by base instincts even more frustrating. I probably would have liked him more had he just been completely one-dimensional.
But he isn't.
That's probably what makes the narrative so powerful. There's a little bit of Julian Luxemburg in all of us. Cloaked by diplomacy and that thing called common sense, we hide those aspects away from the public eye. But still, they do exist. Buried deep within the subconscious, they gnaw constantly at us as we go about our daily lives. And given that we are playing as the protoganist's subconscious, it only makes sense that we hear it all.
Julian Luxemburg feels real. And because he feels so real, it is really is all too easy to submerge yourself in the moment. Gameplay is absurdly simple; floating buttons indicate which key you can press. That's it, really. Press 'Q' to look at the clock. Press 'N' to pick up a piece a bread. Press 'A' to stare at the kitchen counter. It doesn't go any further than that. As far as I can tell, your actions do nothing to alter the plot either.
Regardless of whether you find yourself spurred by your own emotions or the intonation of Julian's words, players who persist with the game will likely find themselves acting in accordance to the story. At one point in Dinner Date, I had to remind myself that I wasn't watching an experimental film done by an art student somewhere in Europe. I had forgotten that I was the one responsible for the actual acting.
One of Dinner Date's biggest strengths is its compelling delivery, something that exists both in the form of its narrative and its physical presentation. For the first time in my life, I found myself actually being moved by the soundtrack associated with the game.
