Lylian is, well, Lylian is a lot of things but mostly, Lylian is bloody unsettling. Earlier today, I decided I'd give this 2D side-scrolling action-platformer a whirl before bedtime; a pretty big mistake on my part. Though hardly on par wth Silent Hill in terms of sheer unadulterated horror, Lylian has a flavor all of its own.

It's creepy. In fact, it's more than creepy. It's the kind of thing that preys on the edge of your consciousness. It makes you suspicious of cracks in the door and drainage pipes and things that might lurk under your bed. No matter how much of a wuss you might be, Lylian won't make you want to run screaming for your mommy but it might just be the catalyst for some deeply disturbing dreams.

Then again, I should have expected as much. The protoganist in Lylian is a young girl who was commited into the loving care of Hacklaster Hospital because of her uncanny ability to bring her imagination to life. Freed from both her cell and her restraints, our intrepid heroine eventually sets off to discover both her benefactor, find jelly doughnuts and quite possibly escape. And it is from the moment that you're introduced to her that you realize that things might have gotten seriously awry in that pretty brunette head of her. Calm yet disjointed, Lylian does not question the shadows that flit through the asylum. When an enormous worm-like creature explodes through the door, she reassures herself that it is related to withdrawal symptoms. However, what really bothers me is her predilection for jelly doughnuts. 





Like all children, there is an innocent cruelty to her. Lylian is not above using violence against another kid to retrieve his stash of jelly doughnuts. When she finally acquires the diabetes-inducing pastries, her fervent hunger and nonchalant admittance that she wants nothing but the jelly really makes you wonder. Everywhere you look, descriptions of the game implicate that Lylian cannot quite tell fiction from reality. So, it's hard not to make a horrible connection when you see fat people exploding into confetti and fallen enemies dropping buckets of jelly-filled doughnuts.

Yeaaaah. You see where I'm going with this, right? 

Then again, this would be a lot worse if the denizens of Lylian's world weren't equally strange. In comparison to them, Lylian looks positively angelic. Of course, she's also a rather pretty little girl in spite of her neuroses and the other people that populate the asylum look like a convoy of escaped circus freaks. But Cass, you say, it's not nice to judge by appearances! I know so that's why I'm not doing so. With pieces of chalk jammed up their nasal cavities and paranoid talk about cannibalistic bathtubs, the NPCs really are as bad as they look.




As for the enemies, eeesh, they're a mixed bag. After confronting the medical staff of Silent Hill, the nurses in Lylian would probably be a walk in the park for some. Glassy-eyed nurses, pssh, please - who could be scared of anything that still has its own face and hair? Gamers today have been thoroughly desensitized by everything mass media has thrown at us. However, there's at least one critter that I ran into that somehow, against all odds, managed to pluck a horrified 'Oh my god' from my lips when it wriggled free from a vent. 

Yes, folks, vents are bad. But you're going to need them to traverse the game. 

Well, not you, per say. Most of the time, you'll be sending Lylian's teddybear through the vents to open the doors for you. I suspect that there'd be more usage of him later on but I never did quite get far enough. While I'm more than sufficiently impressed by the sheer atmospheric value of the game, the same cannot be said about the gameplay itself. Make no mistake, there's nothing wrong with it but I would have prefered a smoother experience. Those of who who might have been following my articles for a while now will probably know that I have an unholy fixation with the fluidity of the game. Lylian, with all the potential welling through it, would have been perfect were it just that smidgeon more polished. Jumping attacks aren't as easy to chain as I would like, I'd have killed for a dash button and the ability to block would have been nice but those aren't game-breaking flaws as much as they are personal quibbles. 



Overall, though, Lylian makes for one of the best debut games that I've seen. Phantasmagoric and beautifully unique, Lylian isn't really out there to reinvent the 'crazy kid fighting her way through an asylum' genre. However, it does do a smashing job at raising the standards by a notch. One day, when I'm sitting somewhere sunny with no ventilation shafts in sight and a huge crowd of yuppies around, I might just get around to finishing Lylian. There is enough here to tempt even the most timid gamer into seeing the game to the end. And until then, I'm just going to say that Lylian is proof that children should be seen AND heard.
