Three Sure-fire Ways Not To Die2Nite

Horrible puns aside, this is actually a relatively serious post. Several weeks ago, we did a review on browser-based survival game Die2Nite. While prey to the aggressive marketing strategies common to all titles on its platform, Die2Nite is actually surprisingly unique; it's Lord of the Flies with way, way too many zombies.

I've been messing around on Die2Nite for a while now and since then, I've noticed a somewhat unfortunate trend amongst new players. With no actual guidelines to follow, no small amount of people have been unneccessarily ostracized and occasionally banished to the perilous wastelands. In the interest of all new players, here's ten ways to ensure that you do not spend the night outside playing host to the cannibalistic undead.

1. Read the forums

It's right there on your menu. Yes, that moderately large button near the top of your screen. I sincerely advise that you click on that particular button is. Nevermind everything else; you can explore the contents of the game to your heart's content later. For now, go read the forums.

While the rules of conduct are pretty much the same, the flavor of the town might differ. Most settlements consist of a random mix of people; experienced veterans and wide-eyed newbies. However, once in a while, it's likely you'll find yourself with rather unusual people. I remember this once when I found myself in the company of people who could only be described as a combination of the Nazi forces and the Ku Klux Klan. Everytime a novice made a mistake, the forums would be awashed with angry demands for banishment.

It wasn't pretty.

With that said, however, there are also other reasons to peek at the forums. Not only will it give you an idea as to what kind of people you'll be playing with, it'd let you know if fellow townies are suffering from one predicament or another. While it'd be a lot simpler to permit the stupid to die, each death means that you're all the more likely to die yourself. Die2Nite is a community game.

You definitely don't want to be the last man standing.

Well, not unless you're that desperate for the achievement but dying alone amidst a horde of zombies is still a terrible way to go.

2. Don't Build That [Insert Construction Project of Choice]

Words fail to illustrate the importance of avoiding the temptation to build something unneccessarily. In many situations, that superflous item is often the upgrade to your personal domicile. While it's imperative to build that tent of yours, anything beyond that flimsy amalgamation of wood and canvas will likely result in you receiving an absurd amount of backlash.

Given that you exist in a post-apocalyptic future, building material is often extremely scarce. That plank you took from the bank? You're going to need that one day soon.

Additionally, while it's possible to begin construction work on your own so long as the materials are available, I strongly recommend that you do not randomly start building something of your own accord. It's likely that the most experienced members of your town will have a preset plan. Unless you're really unlucky, those people probably know what they're doing so it really is best to listen to them instead.

3. Ration your rations, damnit.

Food and water don't come easy. In fact, things get phenomenally worse once you're in a post-apocalyptic enviroment.

While water rations appear a boundless resource early into the game, the truth of that matter is that careless consumption will inevitably result in your well drying up within the first week or so. But fear not! There's a way to surmont this issue. Granted, you'll have to inevitably build up a new water pump and figure out a way to generate more food from your scarce resources but this method, especially if applied by multiple residents, will make it a lot easier to survive.

Now, here's the trick: if you're going out scavenging, you'll always want to exhaust every last drop of AP you own. Take six steps into the desert and then eat something. Once you've exhausted the AP gain from your food, move on to your water ration. I'm not very clear about the science behind this but it seems that executing the reverse will most likely leave you dehydrated in the desert tomororw. Given limited resources as well as everyone else's personal welfare, I best suggest you don't make yourself a burden on your new society.
