Fallout: New Vegas isn't exactly the darling of the media world anymore. Having endured more than their share of complaints and been played to death by most, it has been pretty much relegated to 'not quite cult status' material in the backburner of our collective minds. On the off chance that you, for some reason, haven't gotten your hands on a copy of this RPG, now's a fairly good opportunity to both support your favorite South-East Asian site and pick up the game for cheap. 

USD20 cheap, to be precise. That's 60 ringgit, give or take.

Back when the game was first released, I wasn't really sure as to what to expect; the very last installment in the franchise I had played with was Fallout 2. For some reason, though, the last thing I was expecting was a spaghetti western set in a post-apocalyptic future, one complete with cowboy robots and religious zealots.

More than anything, Fallout: New Vegas felt peculiarly Zen to me, something that may or may not be influenced by my Buddhist background. While some people have found the limited station music a little annoying, the tracks soon grew on me. In my mind's eye, I could picture my character draped languidly across the back of her horse, firearms at ready, a wanderer constantly in search of her next goal. Though an overlining plotline was forever waiting for culmination, it was pretty easy to get sidetracked and distracted by the numerous towns and sub-plots that sprung up like mushrooms in the desert. 

If you're a veteran of the first two games, the controls feel somewhat inaccessible. However, what really makes the game shine is the narrative that powers the experience. It doesn't quite match what I remember of its progenitor but Fallout: New Vegas has more than its fair share of darkly humorous moments. The developers had done a gorgeous job in melding the worlds of country-western and Fallout together and that alone, really, is a worthwhile reason to acquire the game.

    • Don't get me wrong, I love the Fallout series but the fact that Fallout 3 was converted into a FPS really turned me off. All the complaints about bugs & crashes in a few local forums didn't help too.

      I've to admit though that I've been hearing praises & compliments for New Vegas, but it's just not enough to pull me back into the franchise... for now. :(
