As it stands, I've always felt this slight reluctance to provide coverage on mobile games, something that could be attributed to the fact that up till three days ago, there was a noticeable absence of iOS devices in my life. Now that I actually have an iPhone 3GS, I still feel a vague loyalty to my old principles. By nature, mobile games tend to be a little insidious. They're made to eat your time. In fact, they're pretty much designed around the idea of coercing you to make all the microtransactions possible or to make you so completely addicted to the flavor of the game, you'll buy every subsequent sequel.

Mobile games are evil. 

Sadly, they're also very good at being evil. 

Game Dev Story is the perfect example of how evil mobile releases can be. When Kairosoft released their smash hit a few months ago, I wasn't really sure whether the hype was entirely deserved or not. Nothing could possibly be that addictive, right? After all, I've poked around Angry Birds a few times and felt no need to fling helpless albeit enraged avians at buildings all night. Game Dev Story couldn't possibly be any worse. 

I was wrong. I was so, so wrong. 

Game Dev Story is, essentially, a simulation game built for iOS devices. While the genre has covered everything from skyscrapers to the cultivation of zombies, Kairosoft bears the distinction of being the first to allow the public a voyeuristic look into, as the title suggests, game development. I have absolutely no idea as to how accurate Kairosoft's representation of the mainstream gaming industry might be but the bright, effervescent environment my digital minions slave in is definitely not a bad place to be. Then again, just about anything is preferable to working out of your bedroom.




The game opens up with you as the pixelated CEO of a small yet spacious-looking office. You begin with four employees, a rather informative secretary and a reasonably generous starting capital; assets that a lot of developers I know of in real life would probably kill to have. From there, you can choose to begin production of a new game, embark on contractual work, hire new staff, train existing workers or select advertising campaigns. As far as I can tell, outside of expanding your premises at strategic points, there isn't any building to be done. The entirety of the game consists of deceptively simple choices, choices that can either make or break your company or just cripple your budget in an annoying fashion.

One of Game Dev Story's greatest strengths, perhaps, is how it lets you make those decisions. While there are benefits to playing the game seriously and making intelligent choices, nothing quite beats giggling hysterically over how your pixelated team questions your sanity as you direct them to make an action game about golf. Fair warning, Game Dev Story is also filled with some of the most atrocious, game-related puns I've ever seen. I remember laughing out loud when an in-game award ceremony announced 'Resident Neutrality' as the Grand Prize Winner.

Underneath all the silliness, though, there is an actual game. It never gets too hard but it does grow progressively more complex; layers are added slowly, usually just at that point before you grow bored with the delivery of the game. I suspect it is impossible to go bankrupt in Game Dev Story unless you actually made an active attempt to ruin your company. However, you'll probably still find yourself spending a lot of time musing over new hires and your training scheme, whether you want to level-up an employee that could potentially eat into your savings or just use research points to boost a project's statistics. 

Speaking of statistics, you'll spend most of your time attempting to ensure that your game's scores in terms of its fun, creativity, graphics and sound are as high as possible. Game Dev Story's critics seem somewhat less judgemental than those found in the real world. I'm still waiting to hear complaints about how a title is all graphics and no story. 



Really, there's not much else to be said about Game Dev Story except that it will eat your time. It will ruin conversations. It will have you standing there in the queue at the restaurant, shoulder against a wall, cursing at how expensive advertising is. It will devour your soul whole. Currently discounted in honor of Kairosoft's sophomore title, Game Dev Story is a steal at $1.99 and I swear I will deliver virtual kicks if that still sounds too expensive.
