Many, many years ago, back when the Walking Dead was more of a cult classic amidst Malaysian comic-fanatics, it was easy to like zombies. Everyone else had vampires and little, preadolescent kids running amok with wands. There were also werewolves, elves and all manner of things that you could imagine having raunchy sex with.

Zombies, on the other hand, were ugly, dirty, violent things that offered nothing except an eternity as, well, one of them. Zombies also had no table manners whatsoever. At some point, however, all things changed and suddenly, the living dead were everywhere. People couldn't get enough of them. Zombies were getting into food, agriculture, commerce, porn -

You get the picture.

Still, it doesn't change the fact that sometimes, sometimes the trend results in positive things. Die2Nite holds a place in my heart as one of the most thought-provoking browser-based games I've seen it. Granted, it's probably because of my devout love for Die2Nite that I gave World of the Living Dead so many doubtful looks.

To give credit where it's due, however, World of the Living Dead, in spite of the unimaginative name, actually sounds like it might be a sleeper hit of a whole different flavor. Encumbered with a flock of survivors, this browser-based MMO will have players strategizing over food, looting, and travel across real world maps.

The World of the Living Dead apparently features a great variety of things including nine million zombies - I'm not quite sure why that's relevant, but, well, every press release needs a hook. Either way, it looks promising but given the hit-and-miss tendency of browser-based games, I'm going to reserve judgement until I actually get my hands on the demo.

For now, those interested in checking out the game may want to stop by the official website and investigate the existing reviews, screenshots, and variety of features being implemented.
